PODCAST REPORT IN JAPAN Survey of Podcast Usage in Japan (2021)
Otonal Inc. (Tokyo Japan Chuoku) and Asahi Shimbun Co., Ltd. (Tokyo Japan Chuoku) jointly conducted a survey on podcast usage, "PODCAST REPORT IN JAPAN: Survey of Podcast Usage in Japan (2021)” in February 2022.
The survey was conducted from December 3rd to December 4th, 2021, targeting 10,000 men and women between the ages of 20 and 69.
In response to the recent increase in podcast listeners in English-speaking countries and markets, this study aims to understand the listening trends of podcast listeners in Japan.
Summary of Survey Results
- The percentage of those who listen to podcasts at least once a month in Japan is 14.4%. By age group, those in their 20s were the most common.
- In terms of occupation, 14.3% of podcast listeners are executives, managers, and other decision makers in companies, which is higher than the percentage among non-listeners.
- Podcast listeners are quicker to adopt new things than non-listeners and are more likely to be asked by people about new trends.
- Spotify is the top method of listening to podcasts in Japan at 34.9%. This surpasses the previous leader, Apple Podcast.
- The most popular program genre amongst all generations was "news," with learning genres also popular amongst those in their 20s.
